Product Description
Product Description
Hollywood racks started in 1973 when we began making trunk-mounted racks in the back of our bike shop in Hollywood, California. Our Aim was simple: we wanted to make good quality products that were easy to use and came fully assembled. We earned a great reputation fast and soon began selling our racks to other bike shops throughout California. By the late '70s, we began selling our racks to bicycle companies such as Schwinn, Peugeot and Nashik. In 1981, we closed the bike shop and opened a small factory in loss angels, CA to exclusively make car racks, then relocated to a larger facility in 1988. In 1989, we began exporting our products to Europe, and in the 1990's we expanded our line to include racks for trailer hitches, pickup trucks and spare tires. We have since relocated our offices, R and d and us warehouse to our present facility in the loss angels area with manufacturing in Taiwan. Our products are available in all 50 States and in over 25 countries worldwide.

This heavy-duty platform-style rack is designed as a 2 + 2 system so it can be easily converted to hold either two bicycles or four bicycles. It mounts on a 2-inch hitch and folds flat against the back of a vehicle when not in use. The rack uses padded universal top clamps and adjustable wheel holders. Bikes need simply to be dropped into the wheel holders and clamps slid down onto the frames. Velcro wheel straps add security. To prevent rack sway, the hitch system is "no-wobble/no-tools" and includes a locking pin and 9-foot security cable. The rack carries a limited warranty against defects.

Yakima and Saris both have superior products at much higher prices. This Hollywood got great reviews, includes locks for the hitch and cable lock for the bikes (all keyed the same), folds up, and seems to adjust well to ladies & reg cruisers and hybrids. (I have not put a kids bike on yet). The price was right and at this point it seems I made the right decision. If you do not need to switch from 2 to 4 bikes Swagman also makes a nice product, I saw it at the local bike shop. To hold the wheels there are velcro strips. They work fine. With the high prices racks you get a shaped wheel holder vs the bars and click mechanisms to lock down the wheel vs velcro. No rattles as of yet. In a few weeks we are taking a long trip and I will update review.
I am a girl that hates to assemble things and does not know the terms for parts. I had this on in about a hour. Since it comes in 2 peices, each holding 2 bikes it is easy to lift. I had seen reviews for other products where they warned of the strength necessary to lift the unit on to the hitch or remove for storage. I plan on storing it in 2 peices.
The directions were pretty easy to follow, minimal parts, you really cannot screw up. When you put on the wheel holders there are 2 different sides. The diagram makes is obvious what it should look like if you install it correctly. The hold down levers for the bikes adjust with a pinch rachet, very nice and quick to use.
My only complaint is with changing from 2 to 4 bikes I have to undo bolts. All the other fittings to fold up are quick release and need no tools. I mounted it on a 2005 Nissan Xterra, pushed the hitch bar all the way in and still have plenty of room so nothing hits the truck. If necessary it can pull out another aprox 3" inches so I would bet it would fit around almost any bumper or spare wheel.
My built in reflector on the back was cracked upon arrival. A quick phone call to Hollywood and they promised to get me a new one.

The locks both have dust covers, the cable lock could travel with you to lock your bike at sites. They sent 2 keys for each lock and all 4 were keyed the same---I am set if I loose one.
The adjustments for the length of the bike are easy to use. Just loosen the big screw fitting, slide right or left so the total length fits the bike. The low point on the bike frame should be centered on the bar so when you push the hold down lever into place it hits on the low point in the frame. If you always travel with the sames bikes just set and forget. Sliding the bars will allow you to seperate handle bars or whatever might be touching/in the way.
You need 2 adjustable wrenchs or sockets to install, it comes with a useless non adjustable one.
Well packaged and padded with styrofoam. The box is very heavy, I opened it in the yard where UPS left it.
To access the car's hatch you can flip down the center support bars, just pull the pin. You still have to navigate around the platform.
You can fold the entire unit up towards the truck and then it only adds 16" to the length of the car. When folded up I cannot open my hatch.
The pins are all on wires so they do not get lost.
Welding (to a girl with no knowledge) looks good, no chips in paint to rust.
The velcro to hold the tires is short. I have a hybrid and it just fits my around the tire.
UPDATE 4/18, I have now owned this for years and I am still super happy. The bikes all stay secure, no rattles. I lost one of the wheel supports, I assume I did not check to make sure they were all tightened despite the fact I tried to be very diligent on this. Or maybe some stranger was messing with it? Replacement was aprox $75 which I think is reasonable. Many summers I left the rack on the car all the time and even now there is very little rust. Some of the foam is a bit messed up in part from me storing the unit in the winter. Parts all still glide smoothly. I did buy that velcro that is double sided and use that in addition to the short velcro strips they provided to hold the wheels. I have had a wide assortment of bikes on the rack and we always were able to get 4 on there despite different sizes and types of bikes.
It took me a bit of time to initially assemble the rack. The instructions could be better and the parts coded or numbered to fit specific locations. However, once assembled it takes only about 5 minutes to load or unload 2 bikes. 4 bikes take a bit more time. It is important when initially setting up the rack, to place the bikes you are most likely to use on the rack so that you can adjust the location and positioning of the wheels. This saves a lot of time when you next use the rack.
I had a Draw-Tite Class III, 2 inch receiver hitch installed on my Outback and it works beautifully with this bike rack. It doesn't extend beyond the bumper and presented no problems when I was installing the bike rack connecting unit. My installer advised placing grease or WD-40 on the hitch to avoid damage to the protective black paint of the hitch. This also made installation of the rack easier. If you do this, be sure to wipe the grease or WD-40 residue from the hitch and rack components so as not to cause staining where you store the rack or park the car.
The quality of construction of the bike rack is very good and quite solid. This adds to its weight, but is worth it because of the exceptional stability it provides. The price is reasonable given the quality and c construction of this unit. It's fold up feature, when not in use along with it's fold down feature when accessing the trunk or rear doors of a vehicle are very handy. Removal of the clip holding the pin in place allowing the movement of the rack up and down looks harder than it is.
I highly recommend this bike rack for people who move their bikes around regularly and want to do so fairly easily without damaging the bikes or the motor vehicle involved.
Top reviews from other countries
As long as you follow the instructions the build is pretty straight forward (I also watched a couple of videos). It is heavy, but that's a good thing, as it is well built and translates to being very stable when installed on the SUV. Have used both the 2 bike and 4 bike configurations and really like the ease of use. Tool-less mounting is great, flexibility to angle away from hatch is AWESOME! Don't even need to take the bikes off the rack when I want to open the hatch.
It does take a bit of time to learn how to use and fit the bikes properly, but once you do it a few times you are good to go. Highly recommend if you need the 4 bike option.
rock solid, no wobbles. easy to adjust. lockable. tiltable - what more do you want?
took 2 adults bikes and 2 kid bikes on a long trip. bit of adjusting for the kids bikes to fit but once on there they were fine.
had one moment pulling out of a gas station and the driveway was really steep. thought id struggle to clear the back but the bike platform clearance at the back was more than enough.
Tilting is a bit heavy with 4 bikes loaded and i needed 2 people to do it. one to take the weight off the platform and the other to pull the pins at the front.
Likes: - good ground clearance
-fit 2 kids bikes (including a todler bike with training wheels)
-twisting lever to tighten connections on hitch so theres no wobble
dislikes: - heavy
whole unit weighs about 40kgs and is pretty large to store, but i dont see any way around that. just an FYI
