As a first step, I connected this sander to a 14 gallon ridgid vacuum with their HEPA kit (which is a HEPA filter and bag). This alone captured most of the dust. There were a few times when removing the sander from the ceiling that some dust fell to the floor, but the rest was captured by “step 2”… sheet off the entry way(s) to the room and use a large HEPA scrubber to create a negative pressure space (if done correctly the plastic will slightly bulge into the room when it’s turned on, indicating that all the air is coming INTO the room and exhausting it through the filter duct. (This won’t allow dust to escape the work area)…. I skimmed then sanded all 4 walls and the ceiling of a large room and had ZERO dust in adjoining rooms.
Very glad I made the purchase.
Pros
Price
Ergonomics - this has a removeable section of handle and it can also be telescoped. This made it much easier for me to use in tight spaces. It also has a "handle" near the head and can be used almost like a long hand sander. It also folds for storage and the connection seems well made and durable.
Head pivot- this unit pivots much more easily than the PC. It will readily lay flat I the wall in any position I have used. I assume this is due to the lack of drive cable since the drive motor is mounted on the sander "head". The pivot arm is some form of "plastic" so that may be a weak spot if abused or for frequent professional use. I have had no issues with it or the unit at all.
Hose and cord are ample length and the hose is VERY flexible. You will need a drop cord but it will operate on a 100ft 16g cord per the manual and my experience.
Suction- is good but I have a large commercial shop vac with a drywall filter. If you want to use it with a vac you will ne2d a decent one with a good filter. Clean the filter OFTEN. The hose end that goes to the vac hose has what appears to be a twist connector but it did not fit my vac hose. Had to duct tape it.
On/Off button and speed dial are well located but I have accidentally adjusted the speed while carrying or moving the unit. No big deal but a positive click dial or some other solution would help this issue.
Works great for me and Im happy with it.
Cons
Heavy head- due to motor. Hasn't really caused issues on the wall but overhead is rough. I'm not a wimp but holding the unit overhead with your arms extened will wear you out if you aren't and Ninja Warrior. I couldnt use the extension handle as the weight that far out was too hard on my shoulders. The Porter Cable isnt light but.definately had an advantage over head.
Hose to vac connection and spe3d controls are minor inconviences
Maybe the plastic pivot arm durability but not nn issue so far.
Head shutter- I have noticed more head shutter while sanding on rougher sanding discs. It hasnt been an issue up to the 120 grit I have used but may be at supplied 60 grit. But if you need 60 grit to sand your drywall mud you are really bad at it. I'm far from good and used 120 and 280.
Buy one and make the kid do the ceilings.
Anyways, decided on this Wen product since I have a few or their other power tools, drill press, etc...
Started on the walls and then the ceiling.
First I was truly disappointed with the suction as there was dust flying and dropping everywhere. That's when I realized I forgot to turn on the shop vac. After that small oversight was resolved, the amount of dust was negligible, not even needing a mask or glasses. Overall it took a bit of getting used to the weight and appropriate angles but it did the job it was intended to and saved me hours of sanding after the 2nd mud coat. However, even with a short amount of time sanding the ceilings and walls ( 1 1/2 hours), my arms were jelly.
Pros:
* Works and sands well
* Suction with a large shop vac works well
* Cost and intended use, well worth the ROI
* Variable speed
Cons:
* The weight of the unit, even at 10 pounds, plus the hose dragging behind is nothing to sneeze at. It'll give you a workout for sure. It was a reminder i needed to hit gym more
* There is a bit of a rattle/shimmer as others have noted, but was able to adjust by position and how to float the head over the work area
* The ergonomics isn't bad but the switches for on-off and speed were not in the best place, but workable.
Cons.
* Weight distribution, the motor mounted head does tend drop if I wasn't paying attention and not having it at the right angle, which caused a few gauges. But will need to correct before priming. But again beats the time of having to do by hand.
* the hose attachment didn't fit with my shopvac hose, had to use A/C tape to affix the two hoses, worked just fine.
Summary:
Does it do the job intended, yes.
Is it heavy and a workout, yes. Just take a few extra breaks and rotate hand/arm positions often.
Did it save me time, absolutely.
Would I buy it again. Probably yes.
Top reviews from other countries
The dust collection worked reasonably well with my shopvac (with drywall dust bag and a better particulate filter.) I did find that the head would pour out a bunch of drywall dust when I flipped it back over. Eventually I just expected it and planned my dismounts more carefully to minimize the dust spread.
If you haven’t used one of these before, it takes a bit to get used to, especially when placing it against and removing it from the ceiling to prevent the edge from digging in.
I also used it to smooth out a wall I coated to transition from new to old drywall. In this application it was extremely easy to control and was much less fatiguing.
If I was a pro using this daily, I’d buy a more lightweight and balanced tool, but for DIY use, it is a very good deal.
