9.5x9.5 feet (9 feet 6 inches square)
850 grams (about 1.9lbs) Tarp and stuff sack only (not including the cordage and aluminum stakes)
Center seam is taped against water infiltration
8 nylon tie out loops with grommets in nylon loop (not in tarp edge)
Each tie out extends 2.5" from the edge of the tarp with the grommet center 0.5" from the tarp edge.
The loop formed by the tie outs is about 1 1/8" ID.
Ripstop threads are visible in the fabric.
Included with this tarp:
Stuff sack (same material as tarp. Well sized to easily fit a properly folded tarp with included stakes and cordage)
8 x 6mm (about 1/4")diameter, 7" (178mm) aluminum "hook type" tent stakes suitable for harder ground (not so good for loose soils or sand)
8 x pre-cut pieces of 3mm, braided, orange, nylon cordage with pre-placed plastic tensioners.
Dacron (a polyester) stretches less than, but is less durable than, the more typical nylon tarps. Dacron is also less expensive than nylon. For those unfamiliar with Dacron, it is a common fiber used to manufacture sails.
This is a well made and well conceived tarp design. At this price point, it is unsurpassed.
The tie outs are sewn with three rows of stitching.
Extra triangles of tarp material reinforce the tarp at the tie outs.
The entire tarp is edged with extra material that wraps over the top and bottom of the main tarp fabric.
The stitching is acceptable, but not perfect. I used seam sealer over all of the stitching to strengthen it and aid in waterproofing.
Visibly, this tarps looks very much like 1.9oz silnylon fabric.
During setup it is noticeably less stretchy and getting a taut pitch is easy.
Unlike another reviewer, I did not notice any smell.
If you are like me and never trust factory waterproofing, you'll seal the seams and respray the tarp with a silicone waterproofing, this will increase the tarp + stuff sack weight to a little over 900 grams.
As I didn't have a handy rainstorm, I used "the hose test", pitting this tarp against a full pressure garden hose nozzle set at a solid stream while holding a paper towel against the other side of the tarp. Tarp passed the test, paper towel was dry. In full sun, slight fine misting is visible, vs the hose, about the same as is typical for silnylon tarps with a good quality coating.
Overall, at $30, this is a exceptional value for a tarp, even without the extra stakes and cordage. It's well designed with extra stitching and reinforcements, has tie outs AND grommets, and although not nearly as light as cuben fiber, it's weight still quite reasonable for a nominal 10x10 foot tarp. Honestly, I'm not sure how they managed to sell this good of a tarp at this price, but at this price I can afford two, and still have enough left over for a couple of beers, versus the competitors' tarp cost.
Very highly recommended.
After searching fruitlessly for custom-fit sunshades for my balcony, I intend to buy another one of these to use as a balcony rain-fly during the rainy months in the Pacific Northwest; it will also come in handy as a sun shade during the summer months.
Update: I'm writing this review almost 6 years after purchasing this, which is a testament to its durability. Since then I've taken this tarp on various camping expeditions, and 2 months ago I decided to repurpose it and use it as a rainfly on my balcony, where it's been hanging 24/7. During those 2 months it has been directly exposed to snow and ice, a ton of rain, and extreme winds that I thought were going to tear it.
Despite all the abuse it has taken, it still holds up just as well as it did when I first bought it. The seams are completely water-tight, the fabric is impermeable, and the stitching can withstand a lot of constant maltreatment. As well, it's lightweight and folds up very compact for its size. I am going to order another one soon so I can have one for camping as well as keep my current one to protect my balcony.
Bottom line: buy it!
