Great coverage, but not very waterproof

Great coverage, but not very waterproof
Finally got to take this tarp on a trip with torrential rain to fully test it out. Me and my nephew hiked a section of the Appalachian Trail between Woody Gap and Cooper Gap on new years. The wind was also strong on the ridge so I ended up having to tie every point down. We rigged both our tarps up to give us better coverage and used our rain poncho to create a back wall while we cooked supper in the rainstorm. Like others I would have liked more tie points especially in the middle along the ridge line seam. After the storm blew through which lasted 15 minutes, we started to notice my tarp was beading up water on the underside while my nephew's tarp was perfectly fine. Had to sleep with the emergency bivy sack to stay dryer despite bivy sacks not breathing and letting the internal moisture escape. So you always wake up with a damp sleeping bag when using a non-breathable bivy, but it was better than letting an occasional drip hit my hammock and sleeping bag. It wasn't a great deal amount of water coming through but enough to annoy and cause concern while winter camping. I can try to spray this tarp with some sealant, but I have only used this tarp on maybe 5 other camping trips since I purchased it, but haven't had as much rain as I did last weekend. Never had any problems with my other rainflies. What I liked about this tarp is the size, more tie down points than my last tarp, and running it diagonally gives you little over 14 feet of coverage to protect all of your hammock and its straps. It also works well as a free standing trek pole tent in plow-point and A-frame configurations with plenty room for two adults and gear. Overall I give it 3 stars since it does well in light to moderate rain, handled well in 20-30 mph gusts, but begins to fail in heavy rain.

I am a frequent solo, lightweight camper and needed a green tarp for my collection. This one is quite nice for the price. I love the dark green colour and it appears to be well made. The weight of the tarp alone (without pegs or bag) is a respectable 587 grams. The biggest omission for me is a center loop that comes in useful in so many tarp set-ups. The Adirondak configuration (my favourite) benefits greatly from a center loop for creating more internal space. I ended up adding one on both sides with a little sewing machine wizardry (see pic). As a precaution I also reinforced the tie-outs with some additional thread (see pic). It might not have been necessary but I like a bit of overkill when it comes to my outdoor gear. I'll be testing it out this Spring and see how it holds up to Canadian conditions.
