Cecilio Electric Violin
Whether you're practicing, recording in studio or performing on stage, the Cecilio electric violin outfit offers excellent functionality and style. It provides violinists of all levels with the ability to practice confidently without disturbing others. The outfit features a 1/8 output jack that allows you to connect to most guitar amps or PA systems (1/4 to 1/8 cable included), volume control that allow you to choose the ambience you want, headphone jack for practice and a line-in jack for practice with a background track. How to choose violin sizes
Violins are available in 8 different sizes: 4/4 (also called full size), 3/4, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/10, 1/16 and 1/32. Size 4/4 is the biggest and size 1/32 is the smallest. All adults, regardless of their size, use the size 4/4 violin.
To measure what size violin best suits you, you need to know the length between your neck and the middle of your left-hand palm (when your hand is fully extended and raised perpendicular to your body, just like holding a violin). Most of the teachers prefer students to use the length from the neck to the wrist for measurement instead of the neck to mid-palm approach. The violin size determined by the neck/wrist approach would be the size that is more comfortable for students to hold. The violin size determined by the neck/mid-palm approach would be the biggest size students should use. The following table lists the length of each violin size. Find your length using your preferred approach and use that to determine the size of violin to get.
If you have a teacher, you should ask for your teacher's recommendation. If you don't have a teacher, we would recommend using the neck/wrist approach for students not using full size; for students who are deciding whether to used size 3/4 or size 4/4, use the neck/mid-palm approach. This is because it is always better those students feeling comfortable holding and playing the violin. However, while deciding between size 3/4 and size 4/4, if neck/mid-palm approach allows for size 4/4, then buying a size 4/4 is more economical since you don't have to buy another bigger size violin later. This is completely based on economical consideration. You should still decide what best suits your need.

It will need to be tuned before you can play. Initially, I spent more time tuning than I did playing. I am told that this is normal for new strings because they need time to stretch. But I guess I stretched mine to much because I snapped the "A" string. Luckily, I'd purchased a pair of Dominant strings and was able to put the new string on ( I learned how on Youtube). I noticed that the Dominant string looked sturdier and sounded better than the rest, so I changed those out as well. I noticed an immediate difference in the tone and loudness. I also don't have to tune these as much. Speaking of tuning, the pegs seem to be really stiff. And I think I might have cracked the peg box around the peg for the "G" string, but this could also just be a crack in the paint.
This violin is lightweight and easy to play but, as others have mentioned, paint from the fingerboard will rub-off a bit. It's not that noticeable, though. I expected the bow to be really cheap, but it seems to be even better than the $45 bow I bought. I have a pair of Bose headphones, so I didn't even bother with the others. I don't think the rosin is of good quality, but I won't know for sure until I compare it with another brand I bought today. My one gripe is that this violin is not as "silent" as I'd like, especially after switching out the strings. I also bought a plastic mute, but I still don't notice much of a difference. Since this is not an acoustic model, maybe a mute won't work. Perhaps someone can elaborate on this. Anyway, I don't think it's that loud, but I'd be really embarrassed if someone heard me screeching away on this thing in the middle of the night. For that reason, I've decided to upgrade to a Yamaha model. But I will keep this as a backup. I might update my review to compare the sound quality once I get my Yamaha.
To summarize, it's a good student violin at a bargain price. If a more expensive model is not in your budget, I'd recommend this one. Although there are some additional items you will need to purchase like:
- peg dope-- my pegs were REALLY stiff and I worried about cracking the peg box
- strings-- I read good reviews about the Dominants. I was not disappointed
- metal mute-- If you're okay with the level of sound then don't bother, but a metal mute will work better than plastic
- shoulder rest-- I got an Everest model on Amazon and it works wonderfully
- rosin-- It cracked when I filed the smooth side off. I also noticed that it cut a few of the hairs on my bow.
The bow; overall good; the horsehairs seem of decent quality, and the wood bow came without being warpped or having significant problem's, the only thing I don't like about it, is in the middle of it, if you try to bounce it (spicatto) on the string (which you usually want closer to the frog for this) it the wood part of the bow will sometimes make contact with the horsehair/string of the violin, and I've tightened it so much I'm afraid I will break it if I tighten it more. This is not a major problem, the bow is still good for practice and I've even used it in some preformances before.
The case is awesome; very light but still has a semi-solid- body to protect the instrument, and also has back straps which makes carrying it more convienent.
It also came with rosin which is a plus.
the only not so good components were A; the headphones; they remind me of disposable airline headphones. B. the cable if I remember right broke after some use; which is no big deal just buy a new one for like 8 bucks online.
I DO reccomend getting the shoulder rest with this violin, because it is not as thick as a normal violin; it still has the normal edges/shape of a violin, so the shoulder rest I bought fit great with it!
OVERALL: great instrument with great value; this is good for A. practicing at home silently/with headphones, B. amplified preformances C. an affordable way to learn violin (though electrics you don't learn tone as well, I might suggust trying another cecilio normal violin for a beginner)
Top reviews from other countries
- great violin for the price that I paid. I would recommend this to any fellow beginners as I have had no problems with it!
- comes with everything that you need to start playing right away!
- the case is quite portable. It has three different kinds of straps so that you can carry it upright, briefcase style, or wear it like a backpack! It seems quite sturdy and solid.
Cons:
-The extras are a little bit low-end. The rosin is workable, but I noticed a huge difference in sound when I purchased a more expensive rosin from my local music shop.
-the headphones aren't the best, but they get the job done if you don't have any lying around the house.
- the strings don't do the instrument a justice. For $25 I got a better set of strings and it made a world of difference.
- the pegs kept coming loose at first, but I found that pushing them in helped them stick.
Conclusion:
-awesome deal, even after paying for upgrades. I would be hard pressed to find a used violin locally for a price like this!
