PS- I feel that even though this appears to be a simple product to apply, I chose to get a professional to apply the sealant but hovered about to enforce following the directions *PRECISELY* to the letter of the instructions. Perhaps that is why it worked so well. We shall see- my compressor is still compressing at +30 days out!!!!
March 2015 Update -- I purchased and installed Super Seal in May of 2014 (it took me until August to write the first review but I wanted to make sure it worked.) and my Goodman A/C unit with a scroll compressor made it through the hot summer months without the need for any additional R-22. That's a first for the past 20 years in this house. Our leak is in a wall somewhere and this product sealed in within minutes. So now the heat pump has had the pressures reversed all winter and we had some really cold nights this year (first snow I've seen in Gilbert since we moved here) but the system held and kept us nice and warm. Soon we will be reversing the system again as it warms up and we'll see if it made it through a full cycle of heating and cooling.
June 2015 Update -- Well we are into the 110+ degree weather again and expecting 115 for the rest of the week and the A/C unit with the Super Seal in it is holding strong. I'm still reading the same temperature split from this unit that I measured when I installed the Super Seal with no added R-22 since that day. This stuff has kept so much freon out of the atmosphere that I'm surprised the EPA hasn't mandated its use. Amazing product. Just don't forget to add oil if your freon has been leaking for quite some time. I truly believe that is why many of the reviewers' compressors seize up shortly after installing this product.
October 2015 Update - Unfortunately Super Seal could not hold off the inevitable any longer. Our piece-of-junk Goodman coil in the air handler finally just disintegrated so much that even this great product could no longer hold back a massive hole. The system went from cooling fine to not cooling more than 2 degrees overnight. The problem is that Goodman, in its infinite wisdom, made its coils out of copper and steel. Anyone old enough to remember the issues with the Statue of Liberty will remember that those two dissimilar metals should never be put in contact with each other because the copper will cause the steel to disintegrate faster that if it was left out in the natural environment. I won't explain the chemistry but this should have never been done. I found a good company that will still fix R-22 units and they installed a Lenox air handler with an all-aluminum coil. This coil should last until we leave this house. I still think that the pinhole leak we had in the wall is still sealed though. Super Seal gave me enough time to find a good company to make the necessary repairs. I'm thinking about buying another can to keep our other unit running longer, at least until it falls apart too.
Before purchasing this product I did a lot of research online and called the manufacture, asking a lot of questions. Once I was satisfied, I purchased two cans (one for backup) to use on the leaky HVAC.
Based on the reviews on YouTube and other places, it was split about 50/50 as to the actual usefulness of this product. About half the people claimed that got several more years out of their HVAC, while other said the compressor died within the first week.
Since the repair was going to be so costly, I decided to give the Super Seal a try. I followed all the directions that came with the package, and watched their YouTube video on installing it.
Installation was easy and went without a hitch. After the system ran for a couple hours, I checked the leak. Sure enough it was gone! The stuff really worked.
Now the bad news. About one week later, my compressor died. Just like some of the HVAC people had told me. It was kind of ironic that it happened right about the timeframe they said it would.
Long story short, Super Seal worked to seal the holes, but the compressor died later. To be fair, I can't say this stuff caused it, but it is very suspicious with everything I heard.
I only gave Super Seal a 3-start rating due to the fact my compressor died, which may, or may not, have been due to Super Seal.
Bottom line, if you have bad leaks, I think it's worth trying Super Seal on your HVAC. Who knows, you might get a few years more, or just a week. But it's probably worth the cost just to try it.
One last thing, some HVAC people will tell you they can't clean out your lines if you use this stuff. That's a lie. They can, they just don't want you to try using this stuff.
