Last year we worked with Ryobi support all summer (2 months in Montana) to get this lawn ornament running again. Eventually, they got the parts shipped to the repair person they took a month to find. We had to remind them every time to actually send the parts. It was a bad master fuse and a bad drive controller. The mower eventually worked again and we mowed about 4 times before putting it away and plugging it in for storage.
This spring we went to take it out, and didn't have any power. No lights come on with the key, the charger also doesn't provide any light codes. Just like last year. Ryobi support is friendly if you go through their review team, contacting support directly is useless. It's now 2 months in of back and forth and them sending parts and it is still not working. Ryobi said they were sending batteries, asked me a week later if they've shown up, I asked for tracking 2 weeks later after nothing has shown up and they said they didn't send the batteries, we meant we were sending a charger. This is the charger they sent a month ago that I've already told them didn't help and gave them additional test data and pictures that they ignored.
At this point, we fixed a 10-year-old Black & Decker electric mower (took about a week to do, works great), and bought a gas mower since the Ryobi is such a mess.
Ignore this review if you like tossing money down a hole. We've owned for 4 years, spent $2500, and have only been able to use it 2 seasons.
** Older, first failure **
This is my first riding lawn mower, but I've been using electric (battery and corded) push mowers and other tools for several years. I've used this Ryobi for a little over 2 seasons in Montana (so 4 months of mowing at 1/week at most). I needed a riding mower to cover a 1 acre yard (closer to 3/4 acre with house + landscaping) with some moderate hills and wanted to stick with electric. For the price I was hoping this was a premium product and not an early adopter price tag. My past experience with electric motors have been great, especially around reliability.
Initial impressions were good, although I had to go back to the store several times to get all the accessories that belonged with the mower (manual, mulching cover plate). The ride is incredibly rough, I had to practice good posture the first season to prevent back pain after mowing. The steering wheel feels loose, and I had to keep double checking to make sure it wasn't going to come off. Power is adequate, and can handle the hills and thick grass for this area. The 75Ah is supposed to cover 2 acres I believe, but I seriously doubt that's possible, even on flat ground. I usually break my yard up into 2 days to avoid deep draining the batteries. Except for the rough ride, the rest is a pleasure. Very quiet, and go-cart like on smooth ground.
Winter storage is a trick. You're supposed to charge the batteries around once a month to keep them in shape, BUT you can't charge them if they are frozen. So store it in an insulated garage if you get real winters.
Fast forward to 2 month into the 3rd season. The batteries seem to be holding up despite the above challenges. We've had some experience with the charger flipping the outlet breaker which never occurred before. Then I take it out on what looks like a full charge (the digital display is next to useless for reading charge level). After 15 minutes on the flat part of the yard I start mowing downhill and the mower dies on me. No mowing, no drive and it won't go into neutral. We have to tow it back to the garage with a truck. No attempt to charge works, charger indicator light is dead, all mower lights are dead and it won't charge. Wall socket works great. Dead lawn ornament for $2600.
Ryobi support is a week out and still trying to work out a service response, although they keep delaying because I can't find the receipt. Ignore my questions about why the charger won't even light up. Parts are difficult to track down on their site, the numbers are either wrong on my mower or their site.
This option that’s sub 2500 at box store
Gas options that are cheaper. Although the roi you gain some. TBD what that savings actually is.
I like this mower a lot. Overly steep hills are an issue but I’ve worked a route that works for me. I banged up my blades going over branches but easy to replace.
Rough ride but quiet compared to gas and loving it. As more options come out the star rating would then have more to compare against, but as there aren’t a lot of options and I’m happy with it...
Just a note that backwards acceleration is too fast and jerky. I’d make sure there’s 5’ of clearance. Issue for me because I parallel park in my garage into a corner and next to a bench.
I’ve never owned before and this machine is fun!
Had the mower for about a year and a half, and when I was mowing my crass, it burst into flames, and started smoking. trying to work with ryobi's support and it's been a week, with no call back or anything. called in and they said they were escalating it. whatever that means, I reminded them that I was in fact driving on it when ot caught on fire, hoping maybe they could at least contact me back. which makes me wonder if they are this slow to reach out to me after a product they made caught on fire, they must have some really serious issues, maybe deaths?!?!? so I googled it and found out on their has mower someone did die.. Nice..
in the mean time my grass continues to grow, and ryobi , in a week has had no response. so if I had to do it over, I think it would be a hard pass, for the price I paid. could have got a pretty reliable gas powered mower for the cost. After it caught fire I jumped of and the mower went haywire. the light all turned on and the blades went crazy fast. I ran over to it, not knowing if it was going to blow up or something. I took out the key and it went dead and continued to smoke for about 20 minutes. Now it does absolutely nothing, and is a very large expensive paperweight

Now in our second year of ownership I can already tell the batteries are weaker. Now it mows just half the lawn before losing power. And the charge meter is always all over the place. Sometimes it reads full and quickly drops to one bar, sometimes it shows partially full but lasts longer. No rhyme nor reason.
The transmission is jerky, especially in reverse. Wish the reverse gear was shorter, no need to be able to run reverse at full speed. And despite the extra weigh vs a gas mower, it seems to get stuck with one wheel quite a bit.
It does do one thing well, and that is haul our wagon. We've overfilled it and it still pulls it fine. Can't wait to be able to afford changing out the lead acid batteries for lithium ones and gain some extra run time and longer life.
