Reception:
I will say dongle placement is VERY important for range on these. It seems that giving the dongle as much open area results in much better results. I have found putting it in my front panel USB on my NZXT S340 elite, white is on the top of the tower. When the dongle is in this position the range is actually as good, or better than any other wireless headphones I have ever used.
Microphone:
The microphone is absolutely phenomenal. It sounds better than the Mod Mic wireless, and better than almost any wired "gaming" headset I have ever used, and is on par with my gold standard the Sennheiser game one, which is wired so that is VERY impressive.
Build:
The build quality on these headphones is phenomenal. Some complain that these feel "cheap", but that is because these are insanely light, which is AMAZING. A heavy headset like several competitors at logitech, hyperx, etc gives you fatigue, and with these i almost forget I am wearing them. I love the industrial look, but like others the only weak spot on the build for me is the exposed wires, but this is more of a minor complaint.
Sound:
These headphones sound great. Are they grade A. audiophile headphones? No, but you bought a wireless HEADSET. This means that fidelity was never going to be AS good as a wired HEADPHONE. These are tasked with driving the drivers, and the microphone, all while being wireless. When you look at it from that perspective, these are phenomenal. The have great bass, solid mids, and good highs. The surround is essentially a EQ setting in my opinion where the bass is reduced and the highs and mids are amped up. I never used the "virtual" surround on any headset/headphone, so for me its unimportant.
Comfort:
These headphones are comfortable, but this is subjective so you will really need to try to be sure. The cans are based off of the ATH-M50's i understand, and those do not fit me well, because the ear cups are too small. However these ear cups fit me perfectly, and seal well, but also breath and don't cause sweating or itching, because of the fabric which actually contacts your skin. The lightweight build, and fantastic ear pads make this a VERY, VERY, comfortable headset.
Pros:
Great sound for wireless
EXCELLENT microphone quality
Extremely comfortable and lightweight.
Cons:
Exposed wires.
I recommend positioning the dongle in as open a space as you can, when doing this i had no issues with connectivity, and these have fast become the best headset I have ever owned. With almost any and all "Gaming" headsets you are compromising, but with these you simply don't have to, and that justifies the price. Great headset!
You would think based on what I said above that I would have rated this headset higher. There are 2 cons that I can think of. One of them is comfort. Ear pads could be better. My previous M50 had good pads. These ones are thinner and a bit lacking. After about 20 mins, there is discomfort. I have some after market pads that when coupled, make this set lethal. The other con and the single most reason for rating this a 1 star, and a deal breaker for me - the set cuts in and out constantly, both audio and mic. It is intermittent, but constant. Has to be the transceiver. And just so you know, this is my second headset - I sent back the first one I ordered because cutting in and out was really bad, like every 10 seconds. This one, my second attempt at this product, still cuts in and out, but it is not as bad as the first. I can only think it's the transceiver. It seems worse when I plug this thing into a USB hub, but even when I plug directly into my laptop, it still breaks up. It almost seems like there is interference with the transceiver. Maybe these aren't intended to be used in an office environment with lots of other wireless devices. I don't know. What I do know this is the second pair I have tried, and pretty much same results. So I am going to give this a 1 star because like I said, a deal breaker. A shame, I wanted to love these. Will be sending these back. Right now my SteelSeries aren't as good audio quality, but they don't drop. May try a different brand.
Top reviews from other countries
Additionally, the battery life is disappointingly short, barely lasting half a day even when fully charged. The constant beeping when the battery is low is also quite irritating.
Considering I've only had these for a year, I feel like I haven't received the value I expected for my money. I would not recommend buying this headset.
Design and Build Quality:
The ATH-G1WL has a sleek design and feels sturdy. However, the headband adjustment could be improved for extended comfort. Wearing them throughout the day I would start feeling discomfort around my ears.
Audio Performance:
The audio sounded pretty good however, I do feel that my M50x sounded better.
Wireless Connectivity:
The wireless connection is generally stable, but I experienced dropouts in a small 600 sqft condo when I was cooking in the kitchen or working out in my living room.
Battery Life:
I was able to use the headset for a solid 10 hours before I had to charge it although recently the battery life would last for about two hours or less.
Microphone Quality:
The built-in microphone captures voice clearly probably the best thing about the headset.
Conclusion:
The ATH-G1WL offers solid performance with clear audio and a decent microphone. However, there are areas for improvement, such as ergonomics, battery life, and wireless connectivity. Consider your specific needs before making a purchase decision.
Good:
- incredible sound. In normal stereo mode, music sounded fantastic across lows, mids and highs. I spend a couple hours just listening to music and marvelling that this was happening over a wireless headset. That's quite the accomplishment. Enable the surround mode and play a game, and they shine even more.
Not Good:
- The sidetone/mic monitor isn't great. The control scheme on the left ear cup is hard to get used to with the on switch and mute switch in places that don't really make sense. Battery life is no where near the advertised amount (I'm getting less than 10 hours). Fortunately, they're usable while charging.
Overall - very highly recommended.
