Painting a picture -> getting upset because it looked chalky, dull, and patchy where layers lifted -> deciding gouache wasn't for me/putting it away for months -> finding someone's amazing gouache painting and getting inspired -> repeat the cycle.
*The paint isn't streaky when applied thick. It also blooms well when treated like watercolors.
*The set comes with both Titanium White and Zinc White which is a nice touch since most gouache sets I've seen usually only comes with one type of white.
*I haven't had an issue with the paint looking chalky when dried.
*Rewetting dry paints on my palette is a breeze.
*The paint is opaque enough that I was able to cover up my mistakes.
*I haven't had a problem accidentally lifting paint while blending or reactivating the layer underneath (a major reoccurring problem with Reeves)
*As far as I can tell, the colors look vibrant to me but I'm colorblind so take my opinions on vibrancy with a grain of salt, I can't speak 100% for the Greens, Yellows, or Browns which is almost half the colors.
*This last point is more of a personal problem but Green is my worst nightmare color-wise so I do like that it comes with so many different shades of Green. My Reeves set had 2 (maybe 3??) tubes, so I was constantly asking for help mixing the shade of Green I wanted; which I'm sure was annoying. At least with 5 tubes I wont need to ask as often ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I've been very impressed with this paint for the price. The tubes are a good size and the colors that are included in the set are just what you need. When mixing color, the colors get muddy a little more easily than they do with my artists acrylics, but that's what I would expect from a student grade pigment. These paints mix more smoothly than some other more expensive gouache I've tried. I use these paints with water brushes and that works very well. I often use the same palette for up to a week and the dried paint reactivates easily with water. The opacity and coverage is very good. I haven't done any light fastness tests, but I suspect it isn't very based in the price. If you've been wanting to try gouache but price has held you back, this set is the perfect introduction. Fun stuff.

One good thing about cheap art supplies is you don't feel bad for using them up. Also with gouache people all seem to find their preferred ways of using it. Some people don't like rewetting it, preferring to use it wet from the tube. Other people let gouache dry out a bit before using it. Some of us are fine either way. A cheap product means you can fool around with it and not worry about wasting it.
I've done a few paintings with this set, and I can tell that I'll want to upgrade when this set is done. But it definitely works, the colors mix okay, they are vibrant, you shouldn't hang ANY painting in ANY medium in sunlight but let's be real, probably especially this stuff. It rewets very well, which is cool.
I'd recommend it for testing the medium, seeing how you like it, all that. It's not so horrible as to make you hate all gouache I don't think, but as with all things your mileage may vary. I'm going to use this up, it won't go to waste, and then I won't buy it again, but it's good for beginners. Kids might enjoy it too, it's not bad.
I bought them for price - inexpensive way to try out gouache. After I get a chance to use these I will update the review. So far I've only put them into half-pans and done a small swatch card. (see photos) I can tell you that they are very creamy, and took to water well. I especially liked how easily they lifted from the paper (140# cold press watercolor paper.)
Once dried in the half-pans, none of them cracked. A few seemed to shrink more than others. Two colors, the White and the Orange Red had separated and were "juicy" - I stirred them with a toothpick and they seem fine but still dried softer than the others. They seemed to take to water very well and it was easy to reactivate them. I should do a straight from the tube test because these swatches came out much more transparent than I expected. But straight from the tube they seem nicely pigmented.
I'll keep you posted but so far so good.
