My only complaint was that it was kind of slow to switch everything,... keyboard and mouse would lag several seconds behind the HDMI screens. Also, occasionally the keyboard and mouse would drop and not work at all. Switch KVM back and forth between computers to correct it.
The solution appears to be with the Windows settings for energy conservation. Windows is shutting off the USB devices to save power. Turn that setting off. In Computer Management, open up Device Manager and find the "USB Root Hub" devices. Right click > properties and go to the "Power Management" tab. Uncheck the box for "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." I also reviewed this setting on the keyboards and mouse in the device manager and unchecked if it was there.
Works great now. Very fast switching. Dropping of keyboard and mouse has not happened since.
Only quirks are:
1: my Microsoft wireless mouse/ ergo keyboard set worked fine with my work laptop but when I switched to my personal desktop, the mouse wouldn’t function. The set worked fine when plugged directly into the system. I just ended up swapping the mouse and keyboard and solved that problem.
2: When switching back to my Dell laptop (connected through a Dell USB-C dock) my monitors will occasionally blink, some times it stops after a few seconds, sometimes it last minutes.
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
I use it everyday. I have a monitor which I share between my laptop (work or personal) and my desktop-tower. Well worth having a KVM for this kind of thing.
But If I could, I'd probably return this and find another one. It works well enough that I'll suffer along with this one (better than nothing). Unfortunately, I think you get what you pay for, and I don't get the impression there's another affordable KVM switch on Amazon that is more reliable. However, I'd probably look for one that has it's own power supply, and doesn't leach off USB.
Yes, switching between computers does glitch the screens, but that's a feature of Windows/GPU adjusting to having only one monitor. Would happen if you disconnected a second monitor.
The problem I have with this KVM switch is that regularly, and without me touching the switch, the mouse and keyboard will just stop working. This is usually accompanied by a 'USB disconnect' sound. If I wait long enough they will sometimes reconnect. Other times I have to remove the wireless dongle and reinsert them. I've confirmed this behavior on two fully updated windows 10 laptop, fully updated windows 10 desktop, and my work laptop (2016 LTS Windows 10). The wireless keyboard/mouse dongle works fine when plugged directly into any of the computers.
Educated guess is that it seems this KVM probably has some power issues in the built-in USB hub. These issues don't seem to affect the monitor/HDMI part of the switch. The switch is powered off USB, and I suspect that may be part of the problem. I have not tried a wired keyboard/mouse, but shouldn't have to.
In general it works fine, with no video glitches as others have reported. I used the supplied HDMI cable between switch & mac-mini, and two short HDMI-to-DVI cables to the monitor and the other computer (it's good to keep HDMI cables as short as possible). Switching is fast and convenient via either the button or key-combination.
However, at least with this particular combination of devices, whenever both computers are powered down completely, such that the KVM completely loses its +5V USB power, on next startup the mouse and keyboard come up frozen, and must be physically unplugged from the switch unit, then re-inserted before any inputs will register. This happens regardless of which computer is connected to input #1 vs #2. One or the other is almost always kept in sleep mode, though, so it's only a rare annoyance, and I haven't tried exhaustively troubleshoot it. A different model of KVM (large iogear borrowed from another site) doesn't exhibit the problem, though, so this switch is definitely part of the problem.
The switch appears to present itself to both machines as a mouse and keyboard, and then mirrors your inputs to the switched machine. As a result, the switch delay is extremely minimal (less than a second), and the computers don't register a USB connect/disconnect event when you switch.
It's a bit weird that the switch itself uses USB-B connectors, but it came with USB-A to USB-B cables, so it didn't end up being a problem. If the computers you're switching between are distant, make sure that the included cables are long enough, that you have an extension, or that you have a long enough A-to-B cable.
I did not need to switch video, so I can't comment on the quality of that feature.
