First and foremost, the sound quality of the Zoom B1 Four is outstanding. It offers a wide range of effects and amp models that allow you to shape your tone to your liking. Whether you're looking for classic, vintage bass tones or modern, edgy sounds, this pedal has got you covered. The amp simulations are especially impressive, providing a realistic and authentic feel.
The B1 Four also boasts a comprehensive selection of built-in effects, including various types of distortion, modulation, delay, reverb, and more. These effects can be combined and tweaked to create your unique soundscape. The pedal allows for up to five effects to be used simultaneously, opening up a world of creative possibilities.
One of the standout features of the B1 Four is its built-in rhythm patterns and looper function. The rhythm patterns serve as a handy practice tool, allowing you to jam along with different styles and tempos. The looper function is a fantastic addition, enabling you to layer and record loops on the fly, perfect for solo performances or practicing your improvisation skills.
The interface of the B1 Four is intuitive and straightforward to navigate, thanks to its LCD screen and dedicated knobs. It's easy to access and tweak parameters, and the ability to save and recall your favorite presets is a convenient feature for live performances.
In terms of build quality, the B1 Four feels robust and sturdy, ready to withstand the rigors of gigging and traveling. The pedal's compact size is also a plus, making it easy to fit onto any pedalboard without taking up excessive space.
Overall, the Zoom B1 Four is a fantastic multi-effects pedal for bass players. Its excellent sound quality, wide range of effects, rhythm patterns, and looper function make it a versatile and valuable addition to any bassist's arsenal. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned pro, this pedal will undoubtedly enhance your playing experience and inspire your creativity.
1) No bypass. At all. Best you can do is try to dial in a "Clean" patch to switch to (unless you have a separate line selector pedal).
2) Noisy when powered unless you use Zoom brand power cord, $20 sold separately, or AA batteries (which it eats up pretty quick). I haven't tried the USB option.
3) The sound quality is not good enough for serious live or recording applications, IMO. I found the chorus, octave, and synths surprisingly decent, but everything else was pretty meh and all of the drive/fuzz/distortion stuff painfully bad. I didn't expect much for $99, so it's not heartbreaking.
Pros:
1) Number of features and sounds. I didn't know which pedal to get next, so I got this to see which effects I enjoyed most. It lets me try just about any combination of effects and how I might incorporate them before I throw down $$$ on a quality single pedal.
2) Convenient for rehearsal. I didn't intend to use it for this, but I have very much enjoyed it as a portable practice tool. The drum tracks, battery power, and headphone out make it easy to use.
3) Computer interface. Sure, it's not a recording interface, but using the software to manage patches is very helpful and beats menu diving on the pedal every time you want to tweak one of the infinite parameters.
I feel like I got my money's worth. It's been a lot of fun. I wouldn't take it to a gig, but I use it almost every day to practice and try out different sounds. I hope this helps you make your decision.
