I see reviews mentioning the smell - it doesn't seem that strong or offensive to me. Just wear latex gloves while applying this. If you read the MSDS, the solution is largely mineral spirits with the copper naphthenate.
CON: But even though the APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS say you can paint over it with oil base paints and, you can, what it doesn't say is none will stick to it very well. I tried 3 different types of oil base primer (leading brands) after 4 days set time before the first attempt - in warm sunny weather, low humidity - and none stuck to it very well. You could "scoop" it off with your finger nail after 24 to 48 hrs. And the last one was an expensive above the waterline boat primer.
I ended up sanding it with 80 grit after getting back down to bare wood (way to easily. ) The sandpaper would clog up as I went along though. Then attacked it with chemicals. I suspected the reason was -speculation- that like other types of these products from the past it contains some type of paraffin, or other waxy substance, that will dissolve in petroleum distillates used as the carrier compound for the active ingredients. Not a bad idea at all, provides a great moisture barrier, just like lead based primers of old. But this felt a little to waxy to me so I tried things that worked when I had to remove color crayon from things we never wanted colored to begin with. The last one that really fixed it was some diluted household ammonia. I tried all the primers again (and I'm talking quarts here thank goodness) in sections and they all stuck much better and with much shorter dry time. This is not scientific, just empirical observation. And, maybe there is some oil base that will just work on top of it. But for sure I would test on some scrap or a small area before committing a whole project to it if you want to paint over it afterwards.
Use outside - odor is strong but wood soaks this stuff in - seems to almost immediately repel water
Time will tell but good stuff. Purchased 2 of these so far
