Customers like the sound quality of the product. They mention it tightens up their sound, it's low noise, and transparent. It evens out the warm distortion sound, and boosts the volume of single notes. The volume on this is a great feature to counter the suppression of sounds when using clean channels. It's a transparent, subtle, and quiet compressor that works more like a true compressor. Customers say it does more accuracy in their sound and the output is somehow lively.

Pros:
Rugged metal construction
Very little added noise
Battery compartment is easily accessible
Standard BOSS dimensions
Well packaged
Cons:
Not capable of extreme compression
Audible click when switching on/off
Battery cover is plastic
Ugly. The scorpion painted on the front is silly.
I was in the market for a low-cost always-on compressor pedal to help tame the dyamics of my HSS strat when switching pickups, and to clean up some of my sloppy rhythm playing. I'm a recovering gear elitist, and initially only considered the MXR Dynacomp (too simple), BOSS CS-3 (too complicated), and MXR Super Comp (just right). Considering that my audience consists solely of my wife, a newborn baby, and my father with Alzheimers, I decided to forego my inclination for name brand classics and look at budget pedals. This opened the door to the Rogue Vintage Compressor (very mixed reviews), Behringer DC9 (very poor reviews), and this pedal. I've never heard of Joyo before, so I was taking a chance buying this pedal, but am very pleasantly surprised.
The pedal was shipped quickly (thanks Amazon Prime!) and well packaged. Upon opening the box, I found the pedal to be much sturdier than expected. It is a solid aluminum casing and the knobs and switch seem to be of good quality. The only downside to construction is the cheap plastic battery cover. If you Velcro your pedals to a board then I recommend not velcroing the battery cover - it will come off.
Operation is the same as the MXR Super Comp, but the controls are less sensitive. You really have to dial up the sustain to get much compression. This isn't a problem for me because I only needed moderate compression. I have sustain set at 3 o'clock, attack at 9 o'clock and the level at noon. This seems to work for me. There is a pronounced click turning the unit on and off, which again isn't a problem for me since I will leave it always on.
Granted, I have a fairly quiet rig to begin with (Fender noiseless pups into a Blackstar HT-5R amp), but this pedal adds very little noise. Much, much better than I expected.
Bonus - this is a standard BOSS size pedal. It fits perfectly in my BOSS BCB-30 pedal board and plays nicely with the power supply.
Overall I highly recommend this pedal. It's not just good for this price, but for easily 3 times its price. If you are like me and don't need anything extreme it is a very good buy. Don't let lack of brand recognition or the extremely low price scare you away. Look elsewhere if you really want to squish your sound, though.
I hope this review helps you - I actually spent more time researching pedals than I did waiting for it to come in the mail :)
After finding settings that worked for me:
On my clean channels, it boosts the volume of single notes and makes no difference to the volume when strumming, which was very appealing to me--especially because it retains the quality of the signal VERY well for clean channels. There is a small amount of difference, but really negligible.
On my distorted channels, there was a small volume boost for single notes with increased depth (single notes sounded fuller and better, which was very appealing to me) and no difference in volume for strums. What was remarkable though was I heard an increase in crunch. It makes my palm-muted power chords sound crunchier and lightly more aggressive, which was a very desirable effect. I guess you might say this is adding "color," but believe me, it's good.
I agree with the other reviewer that said there was a perceived improvement in clarity for both notes and chords all over. This is also very true; it added definition to picking parts that otherwise would have sounded melded together.
The one con is that the the sustain knob didn't really seem to add that much sustain, at all. I suppose it helped a little, but don't buy this pedal for the sustain if that's what your after. For all the other reasons above, though, this really has become my most frequently-used pedal in my chain for its multiple benefits.
If you're debating between the two low-cost compressors Biyang CX-10 and this Joyo, pick Joyo. It's quieter, and superior in every way.
As for build quality, I think it is satisfactory. The knobs feel great, the jacks feel solid. If you plan on using it with a battery, I recommend installing some small chunks of foam or something to keep the battery from banging around. The battery compartment has a plastic snap-in cover, which makes battery changes easy, but the durability of this area is perhaps not as good as the old method of unscrewing the bottom plate. My plan is to install the Velcro and use it on a pedal board with a power supply so I don’t see this to be an issue for me. The paint quality is good, though perhaps not as durable as higher priced pedals. The power jack is inset slightly with a large clearance hole, which has a less-than-top-quality look to it. But I am being picky – and for the price the quality is terrific. This is not a junky pedal.
