One will do for most folks I suppose, but as light as they are, and as little space as they take up, I think a brace (pair) of these would be just stunning to drag my buddies trucks/cars/etc. out of the ditch. One on each hook of them to my hitch and clevis.
Update: For a few years this sat in my truck (I bought it for stand-by use). I had the opportunity to use it with success. Pulled an Explorer out from loosely-packed, very fine beach sand in which they decided not to air-down their tires. Wasn't a major recovery, but it was an opportunity to put it to use and it worked fine. I didn't have that cringing feeling like when I towed another car with a thinner strap in the past. This felt solid.
I strapped this recovery strap to my tow hook - wrapped it around the trunk of the tree - securing it behind a strong tree limb and then just pulled that tree out of the way like it was nothing. The strap looked like it stretched just a bit - a little is okay (even good) - but the strap is in great shape and now I won't look like the goofy guy with the brand new strap when I go to use it in the future! Good quality - would highly recommmend!
The stuck truck was high centered pointed nose down 25’ off the road. Snow was pushed up at least 5’ in front of it. I backed up to leave at least 10’ of slack and hit the throttle. After 3 violent attemps the truck moved 5’. I was shocked it didn’t break the strap. To give you an idea how hard this strap was tested, my wife hurt her neck from the whiplash and her chest from the seat belt. The next day she could hardly turn her head. I had a blast testing my pickup and the Smittybilt 30’ three inch recovery strap. Makes me proud knowing I have the tools to help a fellow driver or myself get out of trouble. Make sure contents in your truck are secured and ask your partner if they want out before hand.
In general, it seems like a well made strap with heavy reinforced stitching. I have not had a chance (luckily) to use it more than once, so I can't say how well it would hold up if you ran a towing business, but it seems like it will work just fine for the cars that we have.
The end loops on the Smittybilt are quite nice. They are folded in 1/2 (so only 1" wide) and protected inside and outside with some sort of heavy black material like cordura. This lets them fit quite nicely in a 1/2" D-ring shackle (with a working load of 2T) - this is necessary for me because the tow hooks on the back of my van only have a 1/2" hole. But my cars all weigh less than 2Ton, that may not be the case for you. If you want to get a D-ring that is matched with the strap you need to get a 3/4" D-ring shackle. Easy to get a pair of the shackles on eBay for $10-$20 depending on size and you really need to have them to use a recovery strap.
The strap is a bit less than 2" wide - 1.95" by 1.20" thick. The US Cargo Control strap that is advertised as 2" is wider and thicker (2.05" x 1.25" thick) so that's overall 10% more material. It just feels heavier. It's rated for a 10,000 lb vehicle, which is why I think the Smittytbilt probably isn't the right thing for a 10,000 lb truck.
Recovery straps should be nylon so they stretch to snatch the car out of the ditch or snow. Lots of websites caution against using the poly straps which don't stretch and are not designed for recovery. The US Cargo Control strap is marked as 100% nylon, no such marking on the Smittybilt but the website does say that it's nylon.
The end loops on the US Cargo Control strap are not folded in half like the Smittybilt, so it's impractical to use a 1/2" (2Ton working load) D ring shackle, 3/4" would be best and at 4 3/4T is rated consistently with the strap.
