Howard Restor-A-Finish

Restor-A-Finish penetrates faded lacquer, shellac, and varnish finishes to bring back the original color and luster. It restores the depth of grain in wood finishes, going much deeper than temporary 'scratch cover' products. Restor-A-Finish penetrates and permanently restores most wood finishes without removing any of the existing finish. Restor-A-Finish maintains the original 'patina' of an antique finish, maintaining its character and value as an antique.

White heat rings and water marks, sun fade, oxidation, smoke damage, and most other blemishes can be quickly blended away with this simple wipe-on, wipe-off process.

Comes in 9 different colors. If you are uncertain about which color to use, then chose a color slightly lighter than your finish. Before you go to the extreme of stripping it, try restoring it!

Product Description

Product Description

In 1969, Douglas G. Howard set out to solve this dilemma: how can you eliminate blemishes in wood finishes and restore the original color and luster without removing any of the existing finish? Unable to find an answer at his local hardware store, he went to work in his garage to create his own product. His goal was to make something that would be much more than a surface treatment, yet nothing like a stripper or a refinisher. The key was to develop a formula that could clean and polish the surface, penetrate the finish with stain, and leave the original finish intact. The end result was Restor-A-Finish, Doug Howard's first in what would become a complete line of wood care products. For over 40 years, Howard's Restor-A-Finish has been a standard in the antique industry. Because Restor-A-Finish preserves the original wood finish it also helps preserve its authenticity and value, whereas stripping the finish may literally strip the piece of its value. Almost any existing wood tone, from a Birdseye Maple to a Jacobean, can be closely matched using one of the nine available finish colors. Trying it on just about everything with a traditional wood finish, antique dealers, refinishers, and homemakers have found it to be a safer and easier alternative to stripping and refinishing. Scratches, oxidation, white heat rings, watermarks, smoke damage, and sun fade simply disappear.

Don't spill!!
I'll be honest, I didn't have high hopes for this product given I was using it on a 40 year old boat that had sat neglected for almost a decade. It's not a miracle cure for old, dried out wood, but it did make a huge difference. The pictures don't do it justice. The wood was sun bleached and spotty, my camera didn't pick up well, but after treating it you'd never know. It really evened out the color so it doesn't look ancient anymore. Water marks are also completely gone or covered enough that you have to get real close to notice. However, this stuff stains fabic like crazy, as you can see by the picture where the cushion is removed. Thankfully I'd already moved it so it didn't get ruined but I'll never get that out of the underlining.I also used Howard's Sunshield after it was dry which is where the real improvement came in. So I highly recommend using some kind of protection over the wood when you're done.A couple tips. Absolutely wear gloves, you will get stained hands otherwise. Do use steel wool if the wood is a little rough, a rag is good enough otherwise. I used 0000 and that was sufficient for my purposes, but some areas would have benefited more from 000. Make sure you get the correct color. My wood was several different shades, so I picked a shade in the middle. It was definitely to dark in some areas so I'll have to hit those with a lightener. Don't expect miracles. Aside from sanding down to bare wood and restaining, it's not going to look brand spanking new. Have realistic goals. Don't use this on polyurethane covered wood, you will be disappointed. They have Restore-a-Finish Polishing Compound that is just for poly that *might* work better, haven't tried it myself so can't comment on it's effectiveness. This product works best over shellac, lacquer, or varnish. I don't care what their marketing says, I was highly disappointed with results on polyurethane covered pieces.Overall I'm extremely pleased with the product. I will definitely be recommending it to friends, family, and fellow boaters.Full disclosure, I paid for this product 100% out of pocket and was not offered any kind of compensation for leaving a review.

The pictures speak for themselves but frankly this product exceeded my expectations. I've never stained anything in my life but within two minutes of starting on my wooden chest I was finished and it was looking good as new.
